Six Arcades in Six Decades - Corporate Members Event

Registration is closed for this event
Join Trust Director Martin Hamilton in visiting six post-war shopping centres, considering their history, architecture and place in changing retail landscape.

Since 1965, Leeds has seen the creation of six new covered shopping centres in the central Leeds – a counterpoint to the city’s traditional arcades.  They include the Victoria Quarter, Central Arcade, Trinity Leeds, The Core, The Light and The Merrion Centre.

This walk looks at the history of these city centre landmarks, their architecture, how they feature in the city’s overall retail offer, and how they are being re-imagined for future uses. This walk is an opportunity to see how much has changed in the ten years since this walk was offered as part of the Trust’s 50th anniversary in 2015.

Why not join us afterwards for a drink and a chat!

Meeting Point: Merrion Street entrance opposite the St John’s Centre

Accesibility: This is a city centre walk. We will visit a series of shopping centres and whilst most are fully accessible, it may be necessary to climb some steps during the course of the walk
